Patients with high levels of bad cholesterol know how essential it is to lower these levels effectively. They also know how much of a challenge that can be. Sometimes diet, exercise, and routine medication just aren’t enough. That’s why Langford Allergy is pleased to offer LEQVIO, a successful treatment for high cholesterol.

What Is Bad Cholesterol?

There are two main types of cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) which is considered good, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL), better known as the bad kind of cholesterol. Both are valuable to the body and function in the bloodstream. However certain conditions can cause LDL levels to increase and build up in the arteries. Too much LDL buildup often leads to:

  • Pain in the chest
  • Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD)
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke

What is LEQVIO?

LEQVIO is an injection that works to decrease LDL levels and keep them low for up to six months. This injection is administered to Langford Allergy patients twice a year as a part of their high cholesterol treatment. Targeting certain proteins in the liver, LEQVIO helps the body maintain healthier amounts of bad cholesterol in the arteries and bloodstream.

How Does LEQVIO Help with Bad Cholesterol?

To understand exactly how LEQVIO works, we need to look at the liver. When cholesterol levels get too high in the bloodstream, the liver is the main organ to clear out the excess. Many times, however, this process is interrupted by other liver proteins that get in the way. That’s where LEQVIO comes in. LEQVIO interrupts the development of obstructive proteins, freeing up the liver to continue clearing away bad cholesterol.

Combining LEQVIO with Healthy Lifestyle Choices and Additional Statins

LEQVIO is a beneficial component to treating high cholesterol, but it should not be administered as a replacement for things like:

  • Healthy eating habits
  • Routine physical activities
  • Any statin you may already be taking.

If you are currently taking a statin to help lower your cholesterol, you do not have to halt your medication schedule. LEQVIO can work in tandem with a maximally tolerated statin to further treat high cholesterol. You should also continue focusing on foods that help lower cholesterol and maintaining physical activity.

If you’re struggling to treat your high cholesterol, talk to Langford Allergy today. We can tell you more about LEQVIO and help you decide if this treatment is right for you. Call 478-787-4728.
