Immune Deficiency
What is an Immune Deficiency?
The immune system defends and protects the body from “invaders” such as viruses, infections, and disease. When part of the immune system is not functioning properly, it can result in an immune deficiency.
Diseases such as Primary Immunodeficiency Disease (PIDD) can be life-threatening and difficult to diagnose. As a team of allergists and immunologists, we have specialized training and expertise to accurately diagnose these diseases and coordinate an individualized treatment plan.
People with an immune deficiency often suffer from severe infections that are difficult to cure or seem to reoccur. These infections affect the skin, respiratory system, ears, urinary or gastrointestinal tracts, and sometimes other organ systems. Treatment options are available as we collaborate closely with many local infectious disease specialists to create an individualized treatment plan for the patient.
Do I have PIDD?
Some symptoms of PIDD include:
- A family history of PIDD
- Autoimmune disease
- Multiple courses of antibiotics or IV antibiotics necessary to clear infections
- Poor growth or loss of weight
- Recurrent deep abscesses of the organs or skin
- Recurrent pneumonia, ear infections, or sinusitis
- Recurrent, unusual or difficult to treat infections
- Swollen lymph glands or an enlarged spleen
Severe PIDD cases are often diagnosed as children, but less severe immunodeficiency diseases can be disguised as recurring infections which lead to a much later diagnosis. Many people reach their 20’s and 30’s before being diagnosed with an immunodeficiency disease, but many people thrive once finding a treatment plan.

Allergies & Immunologic Diseases
Generally, people with immunodeficiencies do not have issues with allergies, as the cause of an allergic reaction is an active immune system reacting to overall harmless things such as pollen, pet dander, or certain foods. With that being said, specific changes to the immune system can increase the risk of developing allergies. If you’re worried about allergies, consult the experts at Langford and we’ll have a consultation and form a treatment plan.
