What Is Allergy Testing?
Allergy testing is the safe, quick process that identifies the specific substances, or allergens, that are triggering your immune system. Rather than guessing at causes or relying solely on symptom history, testing gives you and the team at Langford Allergy precise, actionable answers.
Here, we use the latest testing devices designed to maximize accuracy and minimize discomfort. Depending on your symptoms and health history, our allergists may recommend one or more of the following types of allergy testing:
Skin Prick or Scratch Testing
The most common form of allergy testing, a skin prick test, also called at scratch test, involves gently pressing a small amount of allergen onto the surface of your forearm or back using a small plastic device that barely grazes the skin. Despite its name, it is not a shot and causes little to no pain. Between 20 and 90 indoor allergens, outdoor allergens, and foods can be tested in a single visit. If you’re allergic to a particular substance, a small raised bump (similar to a mosquito bite) will appear at the prick site within about 15 minutes.
Intradermal Testing
When skin prick testing results are inconclusive or more detailed information is needed, intradermal testing may be used. A small amount of allergen is injected just beneath the skin’s surface, which allows for more sensitivity in detecting reactions. Intradermal testing is particularly useful for insect venom and certain medication allergies.
Patch Testing
Patch testing is used to identify contact allergens, or substances that cause skin reactions when you come into direct contact with them. Common allergens include metals (like nickel), fragrances, preservatives, and latex. Small patches containing potential allergens are applied to your back and worn for up to 48 or even 72 hours.
Blood Testing (IgE/RAST)
Blood testing measures the level of IgE antibodies in your bloodstream in response to specific allergens. This approach is especially helpful for patients who cannot undergo skin testing due to certain conditions, medications, or other factors. It can also be a useful complement to skin testing results.
Food Allergy Testing
Food allergies affect millions of Americans and can range from mildly inconvenient to life-threatening. We test for a wide range of common food allergens—peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, eggs, wheat, soy, fish, shellfish, and others—to help identify which foods may be causing your symptoms. Accurate food allergy testing is the foundation of a safe, effective management plan.
Who Should Get Allergy Testing?
Allergy testing is available for patients of all ages and is recommended if you or your child experience any of the following:
- Frequent sneezing, runny nose, or nasal congestion
- Itchy, watery, or red eyes
- Skin rashes, hives, or eczema
- Coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath
- Asthma symptoms that are difficult to control
- Reactions after eating certain foods
- Recurring sinus infections or ear infections
- Symptoms that seem to appear seasonally or in specific environments
