lactoseMilk and cookies are staples in Christmastime traditions. But, what if milk is causing unwanted reactions to your body? If this is the case, you may have sensitivity to lactose or experience intolerance.

If you suffer from intolerance, you are not alone. Roughly 65% of people have difficulty digesting lactose, which is a sugar found in milk and other dairy products.

Food allergy relief is a phone call away! Call us today at 478-787-4728.

Lactose Sensitivity Symptoms

After infancy, the ability to process lactose decreases dramatically. Our body naturally stops producing as much lactase, which in turn causes lactose to seem like a foreign substance when it enters our body.

Our body may respond in dramatic or subtle ways such as stomach pains, bloating, nausea, or diarrhea. These symptoms often occur between 30 minutes and two hours after consuming a dairy product. Thankfully, there are simple diet changes that can ease your indigestion.

Products & Alternatives

Many household foods contain this sugar. However, most of these common foods have alternative products. Just because you are intolerant does not mean you can never eat these products again. Seven common dairy products and lactose-free alternatives include:

  • Milk | almond milk, soy milk, rice milk
  • Whipped cream | Soy Whip lactose-free whipped topping
  • Cheese | Liddel’s lactose-free cheese
  • Butter | Butterfields Butter lactose-free butter spread
  • Yogurt | Yoplait lactose-free yogurt
  • Cream cheese | Philadelphia lactose-free cream cheese
  • Ice cream | Breyer’s lactose-free ice cream

On every lactose-free dairy product, the term lactose-free will most likely be strewn across the front of the product to ensure visibility. However, if you are ever in doubt if the product you want to buy is lactose-free, check the label on the product.
