How Do I Use My EpiPen?
Your life-saving medicine can be used by following these simple steps:
- Take the epinephrine injector out of its protective tube and hold firmly. The needle will project from the orange tab, which should always be facing downward.
- Remove the blue cap (safety release), and your EpiPen is now ready to use.
- Firmly administer the EpiPen into the outer thigh for quick absorption. Do not inject it into any other body part than the outer thigh. You will hear a clicking sound which notifies you that it worked appropriately.
- Hold the EpiPen firmly on your outer thigh for 10 seconds, then remove.
- Immediately call 911 or have someone take you to the nearest emergency room for medical attention.
Epinephrine is the best medicine for severe allergic reactions. However, it is not a substitute for professional medical attention.
When Should I Use My Epinephrine Injector?
Use the EpiPen when a person is experiencing anaphylactic shock, a life-threatening allergic reaction. Several symptoms of anaphylaxis include trouble breathing, shortness of breath, itchy skin, wheezing, coughing, diarrhea, or hives.
Where Should I Keep It?
Your EpiPen should be kept at room temperature (25°C, 77°F). It is not good for the EpiPen to be refrigerated or be exposed to extreme heat.
What’s the Difference Between EpiPen & EpiPen Jr.?
The Epipen, sporting a yellow label, has a single dose of 0.3mg of epinephrine. This dosage is appropriate for people weighing over 66 pounds. The EpiPen Jr., sporting a green label, has a single dose of .15mg of epinephrine. This smaller dosage is appropriate for people weighing 33 to 66 pounds.
