In part one of this series about eosinophilic esophagitis, we discussed what occurs in your esophagus when this disease is present, its symptoms, and causes. Allow us to highlight other frequently asked questions about eosinophilic esophagitis, so you can be one step ahead of this condition:

What complications can arise from eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)?

Eosinophilic esophagitis is a serious condition that demands medical attention. It can scar your esophagus and cause the space in your esophagus to narrow. This can make it very difficult for food to travel to your stomach, increasing the likelihood of food getting stuck in this tube.

How is eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) diagnosed?

Gastrointestinal (GI) doctors will be the first to diagnose eosinophilic esophagitis. They may take a sample of your esophagus via a biopsy or perform an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. The sample or images the get will help them make an accurate diagnosis of your condition.

If you are diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis, contact Langford Allergy right away. We can get you started on a treatment option to help you stop this condition in its tracks.

What treatment options are available for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE)?

Once we determine exactly what allergen is causing your immune system to overreact, we can teach your immune system to accept the allergen through a treatment called immunotherapy (therapy for the immune system). Immunotherapy is split into two phases:

1) The build-up phase introduces the allergen to your immune system in small doses, working up to a maintenance dose. As your immune system continuously contacts the allergen, it will learn that it is not harmful but actually harmless.

2) The maintenance phase maintains this lesson that your immune system has learned. We don’t want it to forget that this allergen is harmless! Once you’ve graduated from the maintenance phase, your body will not overreact to this allergen, and your esophagus can continue healing.
